Introduction
Each year, Canada draws in more than 135,000 students who choose to pursue their education at its academic institutions. These students must obtain a study permit from the Canadian government to begin their educational journey in the country. This permit, known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows students to temporarily study in Canada and specifies the educational institution and program of study. Meeting specific criteria is essential to qualify for this permit.
Eligibility
- To qualify for a study permit, you must satisfy the requirements set by the IRCC, which include:
- Getting acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada, recognized by the provincial or territorial government for international students.
- Demonstrating to an immigration officer your intention to leave Canada once your study permit expires.
- Providing financial proof showing your capability to:
- Cover tuition expenses.
- Support yourself and any accompanying family members while in Canada.
- Afford return tickets for you and your family after the permit expires.
- Maintaining a clean legal record, complying with Canadian laws, and having no criminal background.
- Being in good health and willing to undergo necessary medical examinations.
- Meeting the general criteria for admission into Canada.
If studying in Quebec, you must also obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (QAC).
Once you have obtained a study permit, eligible family members can accompany you to Canada by acquiring their own study or work permits.
